iPad for Business

iPad for Business

Apple’s new prodigy, the iPad has countless uses for businesses and marketers. Since getting my iPad a few months ago I’ve gotten lots of comments and questions about it. Here are some common questions I get asked about using the iPad for your business.

How do you use the iPad for business?
As a digital marketer, an iPad is a must-have device for me to be constantly connected. I use it to showcase client work, provide ideas and inspiration to clients during meetings, take notes, Tweet, check emails, and blog. This one little tool has upped my productivity by allowing me to work from places I wasn’t able to previously.

Should I get 3G or the Wi-fi version?
It all depends on where you are going to use it most. Personally, I would recommend the Wi-fi version. I have the 3G version and I have not been real happy with AT&T’s 3G service. The good news is if you get the 3G version, you don’t have to sign a contract. You only pay for the months that you want to use it. I’d recommend getting the Wi-fi only version because it’s about $130 cheaper for the iPad itself AND there are so many places that offer free Wi-fi. If you also have a smart phone, you could pay a small fee to turn your phone into a mobile hotspot. The fee is usually less than the $25 cost of the 3G.

If I have a smart phone and a laptop, why do I need an iPad?
The iPad is much easier to use for work purposes than a smartphone, and not as bulky as a laptop. I use the iPad primarily when I am traveling or at an event. It’s so much easier to share a website or a social tool with someone via the iPad than on my smart phone. I also love using the Twitter apps on the iPad to tweet when I am away from home. When I want to type some emails or write a blog post I can do that right on the iPad or I can hook up my wireless keyboard.

Where do I purchase the iPad?
You can purchase the iPad at Amazon, in addition to Apple.com. You can also purchase the iPad in Apple Stores and in select Best Buy locations.

How much do Apps cost?
Most apps range from free to $10. You can purchase apps directly through the Apple App Store which is tied to your iTunes account.

Can I run programs like Word or Excel on the iPad?
Yes. Apple has an app called iWork ($9.99)for the iPad that lets you edit and display word docs, spreadsheets, and slideshows. Search for “iWorks” in the App Store on your iPad.

Can I print from the iPad?
There’s an app for that. Or should I say several. Here is a list of best apps to get to be able to print from your Ipad.

What size should I get?
I have the 16gb version, the smallest one. I don’t store videos, music, or photos on my iPad so the smaller size is perfect. I mainly use my iPad for web-browsing, ebooks, email, and blogging. If you are planning on storing large file size items (videos and pics) on your iPad then consider the 32gb or 64gb.

What accessories do I need?
A solid case to protect the iPad is a worthwhile investment. You can also get a wireless keyboard and dock from Apple that is useful if you type a lot or are a blogger.

What are some must-have apps?
Apps I love include Flipbook, Tweetdeck, iWork, Netflix, and Pandora. I am always looking for new must-have apps so let me know of any that you love.

Great article. Thanks for sharing. I find myself using the iPad in the ways that you suggested. I would also like to find new ways to use it in my business as an Organizer. I would love to be able to use it to help clients visualize their spaces de-cluttered. I would also love to have all of my forms loaded on there so I can fill them in directly while with the client and stored electronically. Wow, lots of ideas are coming to me right now. Hmm.. A brainstorming session might be in order.

    Thanks again for sharing.

Great ideas Jen! I think filling in forms while working with clients is a great idea. You could create some type of organization app to help people visualize! BRILLIANT!
